How to Assemble a Print-at-Home PDF Sewing Pattern

How to Assemble a Print-at-Home PDF Sewing Pattern

Printing and assembling your PDF sewing pattern at home is simple once you know the process. Follow the steps below to prepare your pattern pieces accurately before cutting your fabric.

Step 1 — Print Your Pattern at Home

Open your print-at-home PDF file and send it to your home printer.

Piccolla print-at-home patterns are formatted to print on both A4 and US Letter (8.5" × 11") paper. You do not need to adjust or resize the file, each page has been created to fit correctly on either paper size.

The pattern file includes layered sizing, allowing you to control which sizes are visible before printing. You can turn individual sizes on or off within the PDF viewer so that only your selected size, or sizes, print. This helps reduce visual clutter and makes cutting your pattern easier and more accurate.

Before printing, ensure your settings are correct:

- Set scale to Actual Size or 100%

- Do not select Fit to Page

- Print in portrait orientation unless otherwise specified

I recommend printing the first page initially to check your print scale before printing the full pattern.

Step 2 — Check the Print Scale Guide

Once printed, measure the print scale guide included on the first page of your pattern file.

Use a ruler to confirm the measurements match the scale provided (for example 0–5 cm or 0–2 inches).

If the scale is not accurate, recheck your printer settings and ensure your file was printed at 100% or Actual Size before reprinting.

Step 3 — Trim Your Pages

Depending on your preferred assembly method, you may wish to trim the page margins before taping.

Trim the right and bottom edge of each page of the pattern. This allows the pages to overlap neatly at the alignment markers when assembling.

Alternatively, you can leave all pages untrimmed and overlap them using the printed guides, both methods will achieve the same result. Choose whichever you find easiest.

Step 4 — Arrange the Layout

Use the pattern layout guide included in your instruction booklet to arrange your printed pages in the correct order.

Pages are labelled with:

- Row and column markers

- Page numbers

- Alignment diamonds

Lay the pages out on a large flat surface before taping to ensure everything is positioned correctly.

Step 5 — Tape the Pages Together

Match the alignment markers and tape the pages together row by row.

I recommend:

- Using clear tape

- Taping along one edge first

- Checking alignment before fully securing each join

Taking your time during this step ensures your pattern pieces remain accurate.

Step 6 — Prepare Your Pattern Pieces

Once assembled, your pattern is ready to use.

You can either:

- Cut directly along your selected size line

or

- Trace your size onto tracing paper to preserve the original pattern for future use.

Prefer to Print A0 / Copy Shop?

If you would rather skip taping your pattern together at home, you can choose to print your pattern using the A0 copy shop file included in your download.

Large-format printing allows you to print the pattern at full scale on a single sheet, saving both time and printer ink, while also giving you a cleaner, easier cutting experience.
